Job Description

Controller

Rudolf Steiner School seeks a full time Controller to begin July 1, 2026 or earlier.  Steiner, an independent, co-ed Nursery to 12th grade school and the first Waldorf School in North America, is located on Manhattan's Upper East Side. The school is committed to maintaining a vibrant, inclusive community that reflects the diversity of NYC. Steiner is accredited by New York State Association of Independent Schools (NYSAIS) and the Association of Waldorf Schools of North America (AWSNA).

Key Responsibilities

The Controller will be responsible for ensuring the integrity, accuracy, and efficiency of Steiner’s financial operations, including all compliance and internal controls. The Controller will report to the Executive Director, oversee a Business Office Associate, and partner closely with senior administrators to provide timely, transparent financial insights.

  • Oversee all accounting operations, including accounts payable, receivable, general ledger, and cash management, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and alignment with GAAP.
  • Prepare timely, audit-ready financial statements, budgets, and forecasts.
  • Proactively identify and implement process improvements.
  • Manage annual audits and maintain strong, transparent relationships with external auditors
  • Serve as a financial point of contact for a wide range of stakeholders including trustees and vendors.

Skills and Experience

  • Accounting and financial management experience ideally in non-profit or educational organizations.
  • Technical expertise in GAAP, audit readiness, and financial reporting.
  • Track record of timely reporting and clear, accurate communication.
  • Exceptional analytical and communication skills.
  • High standards of judgment, integrity, and discretion.
  • A Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; CPA preferred.

Compensation

The salary range for this position is $80,000-$120,000. Steiner provides exceptional benefits including robust healthcare, professional development, and the opportunity for flexible work during school breaks.
